This week in our series on what’s happening in Yorkshire this year, we’re focusing on the Sheffield and Wakefield areas.
Sheffield
Outlines Festival is the new music festival from the creators of the infamous Tramlines, with an impressive line of up and coming artists from all genres, with after parties being hosted at Sheffield’s top venues. 3 & 4 March.
To celebrate Sheffield’s unique identity as The Outdoor City, The Outdoor City Weekender is back in 2017 with headline events including the Sheffield Adventure Film Festival, Climbing Works International Festival, The Magnificent Seven hill climb challenger, and plenty more outdoor activities. 17-19 March.
You can never have too many food festivals, and the Sheffield Food Festival is another one you don’t want to miss. Try the very best that Sheffield has to offer including produce, ales, fine dining, street food, bakery and cookery. 27-29 May.
A favourite in Sheffield’s event calendar, the ever popular Doc/Fest is back this year, with an even more impressive line up comprising of international screenings, alternate realities, inspirational talks and debates and guest speakers. 9-14 June.
Tramlines festival needs no introduction or explanation. The music festival is still going strong, with the 2017 line up coming soon. If you’ve never been before, you should definitely check it out! 21-23 July.
This years Special Olympics Great Britain’s National Summer Games, the country’s largest multi-sports event for athletes with intellectual disabilities, is being held in the city of Sheffield! There will be around 2,600 athletes competing in 19 different sports. 7-12 August.
Off The Shelf, Sheffield’s twist on the literature festival, is a city favourite, attracting some of the best known names in literature and media. There will be writers, historians, artists, scientists, journalists and musicians helping you to immerse yourself in the written and spoken word. 1-31 October.
Wakefield
Whether you are an avid theatre goer or a first timer, Cathy, a thought-provoking play exploring homelessness, is a must see this year at Wakefield Theatre Royal. 8 February.
An event highlight in Wakefield, the Festival of Food, Drink and Rhubarb is back in 2017! The festival showcases local food and drink, and celebrates the districts unique tradition of rhubarb growing, with a mix of live cookery demonstrations, street entertainment, workshops and taster sessions. 17-19 February.
Take a look back in history through photography and explore the stunning imagery at the Views of Pontefract exhibition at Pontefract Museum. Ends 18 February.
The Hepworth Gallery’s popular Print Fair returns this year, alongside a programme of events, including talks and workshop, which celebrate the art of printmaking. If you’re interested in the arts, or just want to try something a little different, this is the perfect event for you. 3-5 March.
Join Yorkshire Sculpture Park for the annual Museums at Night celebration, where you get to see the park after hours. Events includes tours, twilight lake walks and watching the sunset at the park’s Skyspace. A truly magical evening for the whole family. 19 May.
Enjoy a summer day of top quality live music at Ossett Fake Festival, with fake bands this year including The Killers, Foo Fighters and Arctic Monkeys. 1 July.
Yorkshire’s longest running community supported, free music festival is back for its 26th year. The Clarence Park Music Festival boasts a mixture of local and national talent including rock, pop, dance, hip-hop and indie. 29 & 30 July.
