Places to eat & drink

Hull’s restaurant and bar scene has flourished in recent years, and now offers a range of unique and excellent quality places to eat and drink. One of the best restaurants is 1884, specialising in modern British food as well as steak and local fish, which you can eat overlooking the marina. For a European-style bistro, visit Henry Yeast & Son where you’ll find intriguing specials and continental beers; top tip – book early! Roots serve Jamaican cuisine in a beach shack-vibe restaurant; definitely try the succulent ribs, curry goat and lethal cocktails. Fudge provides a more delicate place to eat with pastel colours and fairy lights, very Sex and the City, but with a wide range of delicious food, and a bakery and deli next door. If you’re looking for delicious Moroccan food, head to Marrakech Avenue; Di Gianni makes the tastiest pizzas; and Tapasya for the best curry in Hull. Although a little on the price side, Hull’s best and oldest fish restaurant Ceruttis is a must for a special occasion, serving fish dishes with a slight Italian/Mediterranean cuisine, but offering classic English food too.

If you’re looking for a classic pub to drink, try both Minerva and Hop & Vine; Minerva is a huge, handsome pub with half a dozen drinking rooms, fantastic views of the river and marina, and open fireHull Docks. Hop & Vine is Hull’s best kept secret offering local beer, honest food, good music and a friendly atmosphere; what more could you want from a pub. If you want style and sophistication, visit one of Hull’s many bars. Garbutt’s provides vintage glamour in a chic and cosy bar, Lucca is a slick and stylish bar, and Level’s serves great cocktails as well as food. For something a little different, Riddler’s has a quirky but contemporary “garden shed” theme and puts on chilled acoustic nights.

Shopping

Hull is home to some fabulous shopping centres including Princes Quay, Prospect, St Stephens and North Point which provide a huge range of the biggest retailers and big brand names. Princes Quay also has a cinema, bowling alley, a gym and plenty of eateries.

For vintage finds, search the rails in Poor Boy Boutique and Chinese Laundry, as well as Dove House 87 for extra special charity items. For men, Bob Greens and Beasley’s sell the best designer menswear as well as vintage pieces. Oresome Gallery and Jewellery Workshops sells beautiful pieces and hosts jewellery making classes, and if you’re looking for shabby chic homewares stop off at Roisin Dubh. Hepworth Arcade is the best location for independent shops, and Hull’s Fruit Market is a vibrant space offering food, fashion, music, film, art and more.
