York

Step back in time with the Jorvik Viking Festival taking place this February half term! The week long celebration includes battle re-enactments, guided walks, talks and lectures, living history encampments, combat performances and loads more family-friendly events! 20-26 February.  

Let out your inner bookworm at the York Literature Festival. There are more than 60 events taking place over two weeks, with discussions, readings and performances, as well as music, comedy, cinema and theatre. 16-30 March.

Calling all chocolate lovers, this ones for you! York Chocolate Festival invites you to indulge in the Home of Chocolate and celebrate York’s confectionary history with chocolate workshops, stalls, museum attractions, demonstrations, live music and more! 14-17 April.

Whilst not one of the biggest events of it’s kind, York Pride is no less colourful and proud than any of the other pride festivals! The festival is back this year and promising to be even bigger and better than the last. 10 June.

The event of the summer in Yorkshire, the Great Yorkshire Fringe is not one to miss. With comedy, theatre, music, cabaret, activities and loads more, there’s something for everyone at this brilliant festival. 21 July-13 August.

Celebrate the amazing food and drink of the city at the York Food & Drink Festival. Following the Taster Festival on 10 & 11 June, the main festival is jam packed full of stalls, markets, workshops, live demonstrations, competitions, taste trails and lots more foodie delights. 22 September-1 October.

Hull

In collaboration with London’s Battersea Arts Centre, Heads Up Festival presents 10 days of the best new work across theatre, dance, comedy, music and audio performance, from the most innovative and thrilling artists. 8-18 March.

WOW (Women of the World) is a festival of talks, debates, music, film, comedy and activism that celebrates women and girls and takes a frank look at what stops them from achieving their potential. 10-12 March.

With opportunities to experience the growing diversity that is the brewing industry, CAMRA will be sourcing over 130 different cask ales for the Hull Real Ale & Cider Festival this spring. 27-28 April.

The Pint of Science festival delivers interesting and relevant talks on the latest science research in an accessible format to the public – all in the pub! Topics include the mind and body, galaxies, planet Earth, and art and science coming together. 15-17 May.

BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend is set to be one of the musical highlights of Hull UK City of Culture 2017, with confirmed acts including Kings of Leon, Little Mix and Stormzy. 27-28 May.

The Hull Folk and Maritime Festival is four days of music, dance and history that celebrate Hull’s rich and unique folk heritage. 20-23 July.

Hull’s spectacular, award-winning grassroots festival, Humber Street Sesh, returns for another year, showcasing emerging homegrown talent across all music genres. 5 August.

Scarborough

At this years Coastival, you can expect to see artwork, music and performances in unusual locations as it looks to break with people’s expectations of a traditional arts festival. 18-19 February.

For the third year in a row, Scarborough will be an official host town for the Tour de Yorkshire in 2017. The third edition of the race takes place between 28-30 April 2017. It encompasses all four corners of the county and takes in Yorkshire’s two UNESCO World Heritage Sites at Fountains Abbey and Saltaire. Bridlington-Scarborough 28 April.
